The Importance of Reducing Our Carbon Footprint

There are many problems in our world today with global warming and how we handle our carbon footprint. However, there are still many ways we can fix these problems as a school before they get beyond fixing. Even doing things as small as recycling can help our environment in magnificent ways that will benefit us for years to come.

Before you learn how to help our environment, you need to know what your carbon footprint is and why it's important. A person's carbon footprint is a scale of how much carbon dioxide they release into the atmosphere. From driving cars, throwing things away, to eating, we are almost always adding to our carbon footprint.

Because carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, adding more to the atmosphere will worsen climate change. As climate change gets higher, so do natural disasters. Droughts, rising sea levels, and melting glaciers are all side effects of the changing climate. Climate change will continue to affect the earth in harmful ways unless we do something.

Luckily, there are several things we can do to help. Next time you leave your home to get groceries, consider getting more local food, because an estimated 13% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions come from the production and transportation of foods. After you're done with something, don't throw it into the trash; get a recycling bin and recycle it instead. 29% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions come from the material and equipment needed to destroy these objects that could easily be reused. The best way to help at home is by fixing creases and cracks that let outdoor temperatures enter your home. Turning off lights when you leave a room can also positively impact your footprint.

There are many reliable websites to use to calculate your carbon footprint. On those websites you will find what part of your daily routine may need to be changed or adjusted. From the way you drive, to your home activities, changing small things in your life will help save the weather and climate, and in the long run the world.
