Trick or Treat! A Brief History of Halloween Candy and Middle Creek's Favorites

Lots of people love Halloween, especially all the candy they acquire. Let’s take a look at Halloween candy over the years. What were people’s favorite candies? What were people’s least favorite candies? Read along as we dive into the history of Halloween candy.

About half of the population of the United States was expected to buy Halloween candy in 2019. In an article by Insider, they mention that Hershey starts making their Halloween candy in the spring so they have enough time to produce the large quantities of candy that are needed and to make sure they can ship to different locations on time, which makes sense because chocolate was easily America’s favorite candy. In a poll, 70% percent of Americans voted chocolate as their favorite Halloween candy. In North Carolina, the winner of favorite Halloween candy is Reese’s cups, with Snickers in second and M&M’s in third.

Students around Middle Creek all like a variety of different candies. Grace Sjoquist likes Milky Ways because “they’re fudgy.” Ashley Hathaway says, “Reese’s peanut butter cups because I love the mix of chocolate and peanut butter.” Avery Stalls agrees, “because they are tasty.” Students Hadley Donnell, Avery Champon, and Brady Proctor also stated that Reese’s cups were their favorite candy. One student had a different opinion. Ivy Davis says skittles are her favorite candy because too much chocolate makes her sick. Grace Carter mentions that her favorite Halloween candy is Sour Patch Kids because “they’re good and sweet and sour.” I would agree with her because I like the sour coating with the sweet inside. Alyssa Alvarez was very passionate when she said, “Jolly Ranchers are the best because they never disappoint.” I’m sure plenty of people would also think the same.

It seems like lots of Middle Creek students like Reese’s peanut butter cups, so let’s learn about the history of this candy. According to Snack History, Reese’s cups were created on November 15th, 1928 by a man named H.B. Reese. The Hershey Company did all of the marketing for the new candy and they still continue to do so now. Currently, Reese’s are their top-selling candy. They were invented in H.B. Reese’s basement where they were first known as “Peanut Butter Cups” or “Penny Cups.” H.B. Reese started to make candy so he could have a little extra money, but after his candies became so popular he quit his job at Hershey so he could start his own candy company. His personal company is still based in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and it’s called H.B. Reese Candy Company.

I wonder what type of candy will be the most popular this year. What candy are you hoping to receive this holiday season? I can’t wait to find out!
