Middle Creek offers a wide variety of clubs and extracurricular opportunities for its students to choose from. One of these clubs is Middle Creek's mock trial team. Made up of nine members, the mock trial team spends the school year preparing for a single case to present at competitions. They prepare both the prosecution and defense because they have to play both sides at competitions.
Even if you've never tried mock trial before, you'll have lots of guidance and help. Mrs. King, the mock trial team's coach, helps students with team strategy and prepares the prosecution and defense arguments to present at trial. As many members of the team are graduating this year, Mrs. King hopes to reboot the program with a group of freshmen and sophomores.
Maddie Putman, a senior member of the team, joined because she's "always been good at public speaking" and "also likes acting." Moreover, she's fascinated by the law and is interested in seeing how different laws and rules can be manipulated depending on what side you're arguing for.
Mock trial is a great extracurricular for everyone, even if you don't plan to pursue a career in the legal system. Maddie encourages people to think about it as a potential extracurricular. "I think it's really fun and it makes you a great critical thinker," she says. "It also gives you a lot of confidence in your public speaking and debate skills." If mock trial seems like something you would be interested in joining, you should try out! For the try out, students will need to give a short speech just to show that you're comfortable talking in front of people and presenting. As students begin to wrap up this school year and begin to prepare for the next, mock trial is definitely a great club you should consider joining!
