The story behind the real Middle Creek

Middle Creek High School has been around since it opened in the 2002-2003 school year and has always gone by Middle Creek. To this day, many students do not know where this “Middle Creek” is located, and a lot of students didn't even know there was an actual body of water called Middle Creek. With our school being named after something with so little information on the internet about it, and our school never informing us what the Middle Creek is, it was very hard to gather information about this creek. All the research I have gathered on Middle Creek talks about the location and importance of the creek and its watershed.

The creek is located in the southern portion of Wake County and branches off into many different locations. The closest one to the school runs from the southern parts of Apex, all the way down to Holly Springs, but does not come within five miles of Middle Creek High School.

Middle Creek has 106 subwater sheds all over the county. The reason for the high amounts of subwater sheds is due to the elevation of our state and how the watersheds are located on low, level land, attracting flowing water to them. This is why you see many different branches of the creek, which make it an even bigger creek because it covers more area. Although the actual watershed is only five miles long, it creates so much life for our community, giving homes for many organisms to live in this heavily populated area.

Middle Creek and its watershed are not very much talked about in person or online, which makes it hard for the people of our community to care about any information about this body of water. With our school being named after Middle Creek, I am surprised many students aren’t curious about what our school is actually named after. Even though Middle Creek is not a big or popular body of water, it holds value in being the name of our school, and I believe we should never change it.
