Overcoming challenges, the mid-year Class of 2022 gets to graduate!

Updated: Feb 8, 2022

Each year, some juniors are given the option to graduate early the following year. Some students use it as a time to work, get college credit, or get experience in the field that they would like to pursue. This is Middle Creek’s 20th year open, and the graduates couldn’t be more excited!

For Ella Meredith, a mid-year graduate of the class of 2022, getting ahead on college credit was the path she planned to take. “I chose to graduate early because with my AP credits and dual enrollment credits, I could get a major head start on my college career,” she says. Ella plans to attend Wake Tech for the Spring semester and be able to start college as a sophomore.

The mid-year class of 2022 is not your normal graduating class. They are the only class in the school that has had a completely normal year. These students have been taught in every model imaginable. Learning through a screen for the first time and even having to wear a mask at school. Despite these challenges, the students have continued to work hard, no matter what has been thrown at them.

As one of the small pieces of the school that has ever had a completely normal school year, I asked Ella Meredith what advice she would like to give to all the students in the school. She says, “Most of my high school years were taken by Covid, making me realize that life is short. Sometimes it sucks to go to school, but enjoy it as much as you can, while you can. Try and keep some good friends that you will have forever. It doesn’t matter the quantity, the quality matters. If you can leave high school with a few good friends, you’ve done good.”

Mid-year graduates receive their diplomas

On January 20th, 2022, 45 mid-year graduates were devastated to find out that once again, a challenge was thrown at them: a winter storm would delay their graduation. Keeping spirits high, on January 25th, 2022, the midyear class of 2022 was able to do what they had been working towards for the previous 13 years: graduate.

The mid-year graduates get to pick who their speaker will be each year. This graduating class collectively chose Assistant Principal Billy Shipp. Shipp explains his experience with this ceremony a few days later. “Mid-year graduation is one of my favorite events at Middle Creek. The ceremony is small and personal, and it is truly gratifying to see all the kids walk across the stage. I was lucky enough to speak at the ceremony, and I wanted parents and students to know how proud we are of them for not only graduating, but for handling all the Covid stuff so well.”

Congratulations, Class of 2022, for your hard work and dedication to yourselves and this school!
