With a new marching band competition season coming soon, Middle Creek will be hosting The Mustang Classic on October 2nd at 3:30pm. With over 200 volunteers, this will be an event to remember.
Mr. Newsome, the band director here at Middle Creek, said, “The Mustang Classic is a competition where we host anywhere from 10 to 16 bands not only from Wake County, but around the area like Johnston County and Durham County.” Mr. Newsome said that bands will perform from 3:30 to 9:30 and receive feedback and an overall rating from professional judges.
Some of the judges this year are Phillip Riggs, the chief judge; Doctor Evan Feldman, who will be watching the music ensemble; and Russel Knight, who will be studying the individual music performance. These judges deserve just as much credit as the bands because without them these events wouldn’t happen.
Currently, the 16 schools being represented at this year's Mustang Classic are Northwood, South Johnston, Wakefield, Wake Forest, Leesville Road, Garner, Rolesville, CE Jordan, Apex, Millbrook, Enloe, Sanderson, Fuquay, Heritage, Cary, Panther Creek, and our very own Mustangs, who will perform at the end. The music these schools are playing will be given on the program the day of the event.
Precautions are put in place to ensure the safety of everyone involved at this year’s Mustang Classic. As explained by Mr. Newsome, “We are following all of Wake County’s policies when it comes to athletic teams, sports teams and performing groups. So whenever a band is not performing or warming up they will need to wear a mask. All of the food is being pre packaged and prepared by a Wake County CNS (child nutrition services) employee, along with being prepared in a professional kitchen.”
On top of all of this, a resource officer from the Cary Police Department is coming to help make sure everyone stays safe.
The funds raised from the Mustang Classic provide financial assistance to band students for trips to Disney World and New York City. The funds also help pay for fixing instruments and getting new equipment.
Planning for this event has lasted over five months, ranging from parking to the performance order to make this as fun and safe as possible for everyone. Please join us at the Middle Creek football field on October 2nd. The first band performs at 3:30pm and the award ceremony begins at 9:45pm. The admission fee is $10.
If your friends attend one of these schools, come watch them while also supporting the Mustangs. There are never too many people.
We hope to see you at the 6th Annual Mustang Classic!
