Equity means the quality of being fair and impartial. With that effort in mind, Middle Creek High School has created an equity team. The equity team is meant to make MCHS students and staff feel like our school is a place where everyone belongs, bringing awareness to areas some people may have little to no knowledge about: disability awareness, the LGBTQ community, and more. Overall, the equity team makes people more aware about others’ experiences on a day-to-day basis.
The equity team wants people to be more careful about the things people say or the way they act around others, including using correct name pronunciation, using preferred gender or pronouns, educating people about sexuality, and not assuming things about people by the way they dress or look. The equity team serves to inform people about the cultures of the minority students at MCHS. While most people from MCHS come from similar backgrounds, those who have different traditions may feel excluded or uncomfortable.
One of the solutions to make different cultures feel involved and welcomed include having days where we dedicate specific clothing days or clubs to minority students. An awareness program that highlights cultures that are unfamiliar with students at our school could have immersion and empathy days that can be used in a similar way to spirit week. Spirit week is when themed activities happen around the school to hype up school spirit. We can have days where we hang posters up about other cultures, communities, and groups and have students and staff bring items from their culture that’s significant to them and they can teach students and staff the meaning.
There will be a meeting held through all lunches 10:30 - 12:50 on May 12th in room 200 for students and staff. Any suggestions or feedback would be appreciated during the meeting. Speak up on anything you think is important that will make Middle Creek feel more like a place where everyone belongs.
