How to de-stress for high school exams

You have so many summer activities planned and you can’t wait for school to get out, but you have one more battle: exams. Exams can be stressful. Everyone wants to do their best after a long semester of learning tons of new material. It may sound overwhelming, but there are many ways to be prepared, stay relaxed, and get the best score on your exam!

Step one: getting prepared! It’s easier said than done, but if you can begin studying towards the beginning of the semester, your brain will have much more time to process the information than waiting to cram at the end. It wouldn’t even take much time in the long run; just spend a few minutes several times a week reviewing and that will add up. You can study individually, with a family member, or a group of friends. Studying with a group keeps everyone accountable for being prepared and having each other to help.

Always remember that everyone around you is probably feeling the stress too; it’s not just you. You can always rely on your classmates, friends, and teachers to help you out. You may be wondering where to find good study resources? Middle Creek High School juniors Georgia Murphy and Baylee Miller state, “We love to use Quizlets or create our own because that helps us learn the material easier.” They also recommend Barron's AP study books for your AP classes, and make sure to check teacher handouts and notes. Check with your teachers about extra teacher review sessions possibly after school or during lunch, and studying with friends is always a great idea.

To de-stress, Georgia loves to read books that interest her to help relax. She states, “Reading helps me fall asleep easier so I get a better night of rest and can be more successful on tests.” Baylee loves spending time with her dog. Baylee states, “Going on walks with my dog not only gives me exercise but gives me time to decompress.” Baylee and Georgia both love going on drives to listen to music and clear their minds. Both girls love hanging out with friends to feel surrounded with good people. Baylee loves going to the gym to exercise and better herself. Exercise helps destress by exerting physical activity. Georgia loves baking because it's a break from schoolwork and a yummy treat to reward yourself for all the time spent studying.

Overall, when you give yourself plenty of time to prepare and reward yourself with doing the activities you enjoy, you are set up to be successful on your exams. Don’t stress; you got this!
