Martin Scorsese, a very successful and well-known film director, directed movies such as Taxi Driver and Goodfellas. He’s also been known to hold some sort of displeasure with the MCU and Marvel as a whole. So in this past month, fans have released what his personal cast of actors would look like for the Marvel movies based on what Scorsese himself has said in the past. He’s been known to cause conflict between himself and Marvel fans, and according to an Interview he had with Empire, he once went as far to say, “Marvel isn’t cinema,” and now, according to Screenrant, fans have created a list for what Scorsese’s Marvel cast would look like if it were up to him.
Samuel L. Jackson, a very well-known actor, has been playing the role of Nick Fury since 2008, first starring in Iron Man (2008). Most fans are more than satisfied with his performance, though Scorsese would seem to think otherwise. In Scorsese’s perfect world the role of Nick Fury would be played by the long-time actor, Jack Nicholson, who’s starred in Scorsese’s movie The Departed and the Stanley Kubrick film, The Shining.
They also think that Scoresese would choose Harvey Kitel, who starred in one of Scorsese’s breakout films, Mean Streets, and played “the pimp” in his magnum opus Taxi Driver, to play Hawkeye rather than having Jeremy Renner act as him. Jeremy Renner has been playing this character since his first credited appearance in Avengers, which was released in 2012.
Another surprising pick is having Leonardo Di Caprio play Thor instead of Christopher Hemsworth. Di Caprio, one of the most successful and prominent actors, has starred in multiple Scorsese films, such as Shutter Island, Aviator and The Wolf of Wall Street. Seeing that Di Caprio is one Of Scorsese’s first-pick actors, it comes as no surprise that he would want him in one of the Marvel roles. However, the role of Thor is still a very surprising and intriguing pick.
This last pick, offending Marvel fans the most, is having Robert De Niro, Scorsese’s most prominently seen actor, starring in movies such as Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, Raging Bull, King of Comedy, and still a few more, play the role of Robert Downey Jr 's character, Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr.’s character is a staple of the MCU and has been playing the character for 14 years, with most viewers highly entertained by his performance. Even still, Scorsese fans suspect that he would rather have Robert De Niro play this role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
How do Marvel fans feel about this list?
Marvel fans have had multiple opinions on this matter and much to say. Xavier Sample, a student of Middle Creek High School, had much to say. When the question of Samuel L Jackson vs. Nick Fury came up, he simply responded with, “Personally, I prefer Samuel L. Jackson.” He then goes on to say, “I don’t think anyone can play Nick Fury as well as Samuel L. Jackson.” He believes “he’s very intimidating” and also thinks that, in general, there isn’t enough representation for actors of color in Marvel films. He feels that Samuel L. Jackson is a breath of fresh air.
On the topic of Thor's character, he immediately responded with, “Boy, ain’t no way. Ain’t no way.” He thinks this due to Hemsworth’s accent he provides and his “Chad energy.” He states that, “There isn’t a single person that can replace him.”
Lastly, on the subject of Robert De Niro as Iron Man, he states, “He’s too old. He looks like a sophisticated old man and not a cocky super genius who knows he’s all that.” He believes that if you don’t look the part of Iron Man, then you can’t be Iron Man. He believes that Robert Downey Jr. is the only actor who can portray the Iron Man character to their fullest potential.
