College Football: Where Things Stand After Week Three

In the 2020-2021 College Football season ended with Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff. To finish the year, Alabama won the national championship over Ohio State 52-24. This season promises to be another great one, with Alabama and Georgia as favorites for the National Championship. Currently the AP top 25 rankings are as follows:

  1. Alabama

  2. Georgia

  3. Oregon

  4. Oklahoma

  5. Iowa

  6. Penn State

  7. Texas A&M

  8. Cincinnati

  9. Clemson

  10. Ohio State

  11. Florida

  12. Notre Dame

  13. Mississippi

  14. Iowa State

  15. BYU

  16. Arkansas

  17. Coastal Carolina

  18. Wisconsin

  19. Michigan

  20. Michigan State

  21. UNC

  22. Fresno State

  23. Auburn

  24. UCLA

  25. Kansas State

These rankings don't completely reflect what happened last year, but you can tell it is based on the players returning. Most of the top teams on this list have players on the Heisman watch, like Spencer Rattler (Oklahoma), D.J. Uigalelei (Clemson), Bryce Young (Alabama), and JT Daniels (Georgia).

In week one Clemson’s offense couldn't handle the number one defense in the NCAA as Georgia held them to three points and squeezed out a 10-3 win over Clemson. Alabama vs Miami was a blowout, with the score being 44-13. Bryce Young showed why he was a Heisman contender in that game.

One of the biggest upsets of the first weekend saw ranked Virginia Tech beat #10 North Carolina 17-10 with Sam Howell throwing 3 Interceptions. #9 Notre Dame barely squeezed out the win over Florida State, 41-38. Florida State mounted a comeback and hit a field goal to send it into overtime. During extra time FSU’s kicker missed a field goal and Notre Dame went down to hit a field goal to win. Oklahoma barely got the win over Tulane, winning 40-35. Rattler, who was the top ranked player coming in this year according to ESPN, had 2 interceptions and 309 yards with a touchdown.

The second week of college football was even better. One of the best games I have seen this season yet was Oregon and Ohio State. This game was a nail-biter, with Oregon leading from the second quarter, but in the fourth quarter Ohio State drove down the field and scored, making it a close game. In the end, Oregon hung on and got the win. That game made Oregon go up in the rankings and show everyone what they have to offer against one of the better teams in college football.

Toledo vs Notre Dame was way closer than it should have been. It all came down to the last drive of the game, as Toledo was only down by three but they couldn't finish in time to pull out the win. The highest-scoring game of week two saw Oklahoma beat Western Carolina 76-0. It doesn't matter how good or bad the opposing team is: scoring 76 points in a game is impressive. Spencer Rattler threw for 243 yards and 5 touchdowns.

North Carolina played Georgia State following their loss and had something to prove. Sam Howell threw for 352 yards and 3 touchdowns while running for 104 yards and 2 touchdowns in an easy win.

In week 3, Alabama vs Florida was a shootout until the end but Alabama pulled out the win 31-29. Clemson struggled against unranked Georgia Tech, only winning 14-8.
